Serengeti is best known for great optics in fashion-forward styles, but when the company puts its design mind to it, it produces a great sport shade as well. Maestrale is so lightweight and exceptionally comfortable that it practically takes the ordeal out of a century ride or an Ironman-length triathlon. Its lobster-pincer temples are sprung just enough to hold tight on a bumpy ride or trail run, but they’re also thin and pliant—their grasp is virtually unnoticeable, and the soft dimpled nosepiece makes you wonder why you put up with anything more austere. Yet the stars of the show here are Maestrale’s polycarbonate Polarmax Drivers lenses, a greatest-hits version of sunglass lenses: polarized, photochromic (they permit up to 18% visible light transmission, and darken to 10%), and sharp as can be. The high-contrast brown tint is great in low light, complementing the photochromic feature perfectly—many’s the morning I went out for a foggy bike ride and came back in bright sunshine. All that and a red frame that would look mighty fine behind the wheel of a cherry Ferrari. Savona hails from Serengeti’s Cosmopolitan collection, which means they made me look a whole lot more sophisticated than I am. I strutted around town and sand wearing it in a shiny black frame with the kind of long vertical axis that pleases celebrities (“Hey, look at me! I’m incognito!”) I drew disappointed paparazzi. Neat touch: The inside of the gently wrapped, 6-base frame is done up in a crazy zebra mosaic. But don’t think all the hoopla means Savona skimps on lens quality. Serengeti loads it with a polarized, photochromic (24% to 9% visible light transmission), brown-tint glass they call Drivers. It’s a brilliant lens. Life springs to life.
